Several different ethnic groups can fit inside one and the same motherland, for example, in Russia, in addition to Russians, there are Tsetsen, Karelians and other ethnic groups as citizens. This is also the case in Finland, where in addition to Finns, Finno-Swedes and Sami people live.
In nationalism, the idea of nationality, which became popular in the 1800th century, is based on the premise that such ethnic groups form a nationality and therefore should also have their own territory that they can govern independently. At its best, nationalism is a healthy interest in one's own cultural roots and the recognition of national cultural heritage and one's own identity.
But the dark side of nationalism, or perhaps rather extreme nationalism, is the desire for an ethnically pure state and the tendency to treat those who are "strangers" in that nationally pure ideal state with a perverse and discriminatory attitude. Nationalism is at its worst when it involves the belief that one's own ethnic group is somehow more developed or more valuable than other, "lower" nationalities, which can then be subjugated, enslaved or killed, in the path of the "master race" to conquer the world.
(Of course, many other ethnicities and immigrants also live in Finland today, the largest group of which is ethnic Russians, but Swedish-speakers and Sami people have a special status in Finnish legislation.)
Of course, this difference is also easy to open through an example:
Putin is a patriot: he clearly loves his country deeply and strives to act in the best interests of its citizens. There is also a nationalist in him to some extent: he clearly also values his own Russian cultural heritage and the Orthodox Church as part of it.
At the same time, however, he strives in his speeches and actions to clearly highlight his position that all forms of racism and discrimination against other ethnic populations in Russia are unpatriotic. In Russia, as far as I can tell, efforts have been made to protect the linguistic, cultural and religious rights of different ethnic groups. It requires great statesmanship from the ruler to keep such a multinational state together. Putin has been a good conductor in this.
Ukraine - well, that's an example of what happens when you start fueling extreme nationalism and demand within a state made up of many ethnic groups that all its ethnic minorities (e.g. Russian, Hungarian and Greek speakers) suddenly use only the Ukrainian language.
Israel, of course, in its own Jewish nationalism based on religion, is also a sadly warning example.
This is already going far from the topic, but patriotism is also a difficult concept for "new Finns": for example, a son born in Finland to Somali parents has his homeland in Somalia. What is the glue that holds the inhabitants of a country together if it is not the idea of belonging to the same nation and common roots?

Ukraine is not only a part of Russia since the days of the empire. The region of Ukraine is the birthplace of the Russian people, i.e. the region where the first Russian state was born/founded in the 800th century. Historians speak of Kievan Rus. From there, the Russians spread to the northeast and established their new capital in Moscow. After that, the Russians who remained in the Kiev area were called Little Russians. Even at the beginning of the 1900th century, linguists considered the Ukrainian language to be only one dialect of Russian. Ukraine is a very young country.
Ukraine is therefore a more important place for Russians than just a former Soviet state. Apparently, the great evil empire knew this when they struck right at it and caused this peculiar military operation. After all, the Russians didn't react in any strange way when, for example, the former NL state of Georgia became independent and literally ran "to the skirts of the West". Only when they tried to expand towards Russia and conquer South Ossetia did Russia react. This war in Ukraine is the same resistance to the continuation of Western expansion.
As I recall, Crimea was conquered by Russia in 1789 by Empress Catherine II from the Ottoman Empire. If Crimea should be returned to its original owners, it should be returned to Turkey's Erdogan! Crimeans are 90% Russian (not even Ukrainian Russians). The rest are Crimean Tatars (Ottoman refugees). Almost no Crimean wants to return to Ukraine. Some 90 percent voted for joining Russia in the referendum.
The United States is truly a "cradle to grave business". Everything happens on business terms. Many areas of society that are managed by public authorities in Europe are private businesses there.
